ASPHALT RESURFACING
A brand-new wearing course over structurally sound pavement.
THE SERVICE.
Resurfacing (also called an overlay) installs a new layer of asphalt over existing pavement that is structurally sound but worn on the surface. It's the middle ground between sealcoating and full replacement — and when the base is good, it delivers a like-new driving surface at a fraction of replacement cost.
Rought Asphalt & Paving evaluates whether your pavement is a resurfacing candidate by checking base condition, drainage, and the extent of cracking. Where needed, we mill the surface to maintain curb reveals and transitions, patch failed areas first, and then install a new asphalt wearing course, compacted and rolled to a smooth finish.
Resurfacing is one of the most common projects we perform for commercial parking lots and longer residential drives across Lake Norman and Greater Charlotte.
COMMON APPLICATIONS.
- Parking lots with widespread surface wear but a sound base
- Driveways that are faded, rough, or shallow-cracked
- Pavement with raveling or minor surface failures
- Matching new pavement sections to existing lots
- Correcting surface irregularities before sealcoating programs

WHY PROPERTY OWNERS CHOOSE ROUGHT.
Like-new surface, fraction of the cost
Resurfacing typically costs 40–60% less than full replacement while delivering a smooth, black, new-looking pavement.
Fast turnaround
Most resurfacing projects are completed in 1–3 days with minimal disruption to tenants or households.
Extends pavement life by years
A properly installed overlay adds 8–15 years of service life to pavement that's structurally sound underneath.
Honest recommendations
If your pavement needs patching instead of an overlay — or replacement instead of resurfacing — we'll tell you. Overlays over bad bases fail, and we won't sell you one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
How do I know if my pavement needs resurfacing or replacement?+
It comes down to the base. Alligator cracking, deep potholes, and large failed areas usually indicate base failure — those areas need full-depth repair. Surface wear, fading, and shallow cracking are resurfacing candidates. Our estimate includes an honest assessment.
How thick is a resurfacing layer?+
Typically 1.5–2 inches of compacted asphalt, specified based on traffic loads. Heavier-use areas get thicker sections.
Will resurfacing change my curb or driveway height?+
Where needed, we mill the existing surface first so the new asphalt maintains proper height at curbs, garage floors, sidewalks, and drainage structures.
How long does a resurfaced lot last?+
With good drainage and a maintenance sealcoating cycle, an overlay commonly delivers 8–15 years of service life.
